DESCRIPTION:Jim Schmidt will be telling us about “Growing up in Orland”In February 1973 Jim was asked by his friend Greg McCombs\, at that time the editor of the Orland Unit-Register\, to write a weekly feature column for the newspaper. Jim named the column “Tuning Up.” He wrote 104 features\, telling stories mostly about growing up in Orland and the valley.Upon his return to the north state Jim began playing piano with Chico musicians. He became involved in the Chico music scene in 1975 and continues playing today.Since 1995 Jim has been a radio disc jockey\, hosting the Facets of Jazz show on KZFR 90.1 FM from 9:00-11:30 a.m. on the second Tuesday of the month.

DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, January 4th\, at 10:00 a.m. \n\n\n\nOur guest speaker for the January 4th meeting will be Dr. Mike Findlay\, a retired Anthropology Professor and author.   Dr. Findlay received his MA from CSU-Chico in 1984 and his PhD from the University of Oregon in 1992.  He began his career as a part-time lecturer at Butte Community College and at Chico State University at the same time teaching cultural anthropology\, language\, linguistics\, MesoAmerica\, and tourism courses.  \n\n\n\nLater on Mike became a full-time instructor at Butte Community College. He became involved in the SE Asian Student Association and was awarded Educator of the Year in 2013. \n\n\n\nAnd if he was not busy enough already\, Mike has been a tour guide with CSU-Chico in the Anthropology Department to Canada and the Southwest in the USA \n\n\n\n“He is a respected and published scholar who has contributed to research in several fields\, including Asian-American Culture and MesoAmerican Studies.”  His latest book is on Ancient MesoAmerica (2020)\, and he comes highly recommended by book reviewer Dan Barnett.

DESCRIPTION:Open to the public- the Friends will meet on November 2nd at 10am in the Library Community Room. \nKevin Harrington has a current interest in writing biographies of World War II veterans for a volunteer project–Stories Behind the Stars: https://www.storiesbehindthestars.org/ SBTS seeks to write obituary-biographies of all 421\,000+ vets that died during the WW II conflict before the 2025 anniversary of the end of WW II. Kevin’s STBS work currently includes 200+ stories about Northern California casualties including the counties of Glenn\, Colusa\, Trinity\, and Tehama. Kevin’s FOFL program on 2 Nov 2023 will be about his Stories Behind the Stars work. \nKevin\, is the son of Richard (OHS ’36) and “Verdi” Harrington\, was raised in Orland and graduated from Orland High School with the Class of 1973. He has an Associate Degree in Electronics Technology and has been a professional photographer (5 years)\, computer repair and computer network specialist at UC\, Davis (12 years)\, and a computer network support for Sacramento Municipal Utilities District (21.5 years). He lives in Davis and is currently retired.
