Sweet Tooth

As the newest member of the staff here at the Orland Free Library, when I was asked to start posting on our blog my first thought was: what will I write about?! Then I remembered; write what you know. Well, I know little about a lot, but one of the things I know a lot about and enjoy doing is baking! With the weather still blustery and all of those holiday goodies a distant (but delicious!) memory,  I plan on doing some great baking this weekend.  First up is testing a recipe for Dulce de Leche cupcakes. Then on to my standby (and award winning) Red Velvet cake.  Then… who knows?
Now I certainly can’t have all that deliciousness around and maintain my blood sugars, so I’ll be sharing with coworkers and fellow classmates. If you’d like to spend some time baking while  Mother Nature is making up her mind,  your library has some great books for you to browse. The Dewey call number for general baking is 641.71  and specifically for breads is 641.815. But if you are looking for something sweet, decadent and lip-smacking, might I suggest looking in the 641.865 range? There you will find the wonderful “Whimsical Bakehouse” cake book by Kaye and Liv Hansen. How about trying Nick Malgieri’s “Cookies Unlimited“? Not to mention the classic “The Cake Bible” by Rose Levy Beranbaum.
By the way, baking with your children is a great way to spend an afternoon. And you know they’ll eat what you baked! There are plenty more titles to choose from here at the library, so come on in and take a look.      Happy Baking!

I just tried red velvet cake (actually it was a cupcake from Starbucks) for the first time a couple of months ago. Wow- so good! Never knew what I was missing.

Did I hear you say “sharing with coworkers”? I see a delicious future ahead . . .
