Early Literacy Tips

Early Literacy is what children learn about books and reading before they go to school. There’s a lot you can do as a parent or grandparent to help your child get ready to read:
Read to your child every day. Keep books in the home and in the car.
Keep books where your child can reach them.  (Isn’t fun to watch a child read a story to herself?)
Show your child how you read every day for work and for enjoyment. (Read the newspaper, read a recipe, read online.)
Read signs out loud to your child as you walk or drive around town. (S-T-O-P spells Stop. RR means railroad crossing.)
Talk about what you read. Discuss the pictures and the story.
Happy Reading!
